Holly and I just attended a Wellness Meeting for the Farmington School District. I have heard that Sibley HS has been having these as well and that we have had Catalyst presence! All I can say is that I am super excited that Catalyst's new healthy food movement is getting its feet off the ground.
Even if you don't know where Farmington is, I'd sure like Catalyst people's input on how they feel about school food.
Main issues brought up that apply to our movement were:
- Drinks in the classroom (Currently in some classrooms, teachers allow any drinks. We would like to keep it to just water.) Take the poll to share your thoughts on drinks in the classroom.
- Breakfast in the high school (Currently breakfast is served everywhere except the high school in our district. We brought this up as an idea to discourage frequenting the school store for unhealthy breakfast items, however breakfast at school can be costly for the interest involved in it.)
- The school store (Currently Farmington High School offers a business class that involves running a store that is open almost all day. There are very few healthy options and the school store sells candy, chips, pop, cappachinos, and doughnuts daily. We would like to talk to the teacher about incorporating more healthy options into the school store.)
So I want to get a discussion on however you feel about school food... even not on the issues mentioned above. But for a starting point answer any of these questions:
How do things work in your school with school food?
How do you wish they did?
What do you think about each of the above issues? Are they real problems? If so, how would you solve them?
How do you think students would respond to the solutions/ any healthy eating initiative?
Thank you and have an AWESOME summer! See you all soon... Come to the Catalyst events!
