Check out some of the killer quotes behind the study published yesterday about Polonium-210 in tobacco and tobacco smoke.
For example, an internal handwritten note from Philip Morris' docuements mentions reluctance to release research about Polonium-210 and ciagarettes/tobacco smoke.
On June 2, 1978, R.B. Seligman writes:
"It has the potential to wake a sleeping giant."
An R.J. Reynolds document from December 1985 reveals similar reservations about releasing info to the public.
"The Law Department and R&D [Research and Development] management have on some occasions denied permission to publish some research results. These denials were, in some instances, the result of competitive concerns. . . and, inothers, an unwillingness to draw attention to topics that could be considered problematic of the Industry from a smoking and
health stand point. . . . Polonium research.”
Just another example of Big Tobacco keeping its customers in the dark . . .

Here is the handwritten note from June 2, 1978! You can find more tobacco docs and killer quotes online at the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library.
