FoodCorps Sets out to Tackle Obesity

This year, an awesome new program called FoodCorps kicked off across America. The program is a division of AmeriCorps, a program that allows young people to participate in different service programs across the country. FoodCorps places young people in underserved communities to help them implement projects designed to:

  • Deliver hands-on nutrition education
  • Build and tend school gardens
  • Bring high-quality local food into public school cafeterias

The goals of all these practices is simple: reduce and eliminate America's obesity crisis. Not that this is a simple challenge to mount, but something has to be done, as more than 30% American's struggle with obesity. According to the Food Corps website:

  • The U.S. spends $147 billion on obesity-related illnesses each year
  • 1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 is on track to develop Type II diabetes
  • 1 in 4 young adults are too overweight to qualify for military service

Currently, there are 50 FoodCorps members working on different nutrition projects across America. More than 1,000 applicants applied to only 50 positions, so those who made the cut are highly qualified and deeply invested.

For more info on this amazing program, check out the FoodCorps website, and find a way to join in on its mission.
